NJASA Presents "The Power of Legal Information: A 3-Part Series of Practical Issues to Keep School Administrators Current & Compliant"

Session I - Tuesday, November 15, 2022: Students

Combining best practices with sound strategies that are reasonable and practical will be the focus of this virtual session (via Zoom).  Current trends in hazing, bullying prevention and investigation, and anti-discrimination particularly as they affect students with disabilities will be discussed.  Recent legislation including Mallory's Law and Piazza's Law, First Amendment rights, gender equity, Comprehensive Health and Physical Education and Opting Out, and Title IX issues also will be addressed.

Part I: Student Anti-Discrimination Rights: Where Do They Stand in This Fractious Environment?  First Amendment rights and racial and gender equity issues will be discussed in this context: What are our legal obligations toward students who fall into any of the protected categories under the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination?  Presenter: Philip E. Stern, Esq., DiFrancesco, Bateman, Kunzman, Davis, Lehrer & Flaum, PC.

Part II: Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying.  We will review current trends in anti-bullying efforts and hazing prevention and investigation, as well as withstanding social media and other attacks on implementing Comprehensive Health and Physical Education.  These issues also will be explored in light of how they affect all students as well as those with disabilities.  Presenter: Beth L. Session II - Wednesday, February 22, 2023: Governance

Spend time with us as we identify appropriate and reasonable solutions to Governance issues.  Here is the agenda for this session:

Session III - Wednesday, April 19, 2023: Personnel

This session will focus on state law related to tenure, seniority and employment matters, as well as a discussion of new laws and recent changes to laws that impact employees and/or labor matters.  Here is the agenda for this session:

9:55 a.m. - 11:10 a.m. - Part II: Employment Investigations - A Review of Affirmative Action & Healthy Workplace, Tips for Conducting, and Creating Productive Outcomes.  Presenter: Alicia D'Anella, Esq., Counsel, Parker McCay.

11:10 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. - Restroom Break/Coffee Break

11:15 a.m. - 11:50 a.m. - Part III: Cannabis in the Workplace.  Presenter: Jeffrey Catalano, Esq., Associate, Parker McCay.

11:50 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. - Question & Answer Session

12:00 noon - Program Concludes
